Anna Maria Softball Announces 2021 Captains

Anna Maria Softball Announces 2021 Captains

Paxton, MA- The Anna Maria softball team and head coach Larry Sasso announced the team captains this morning for the upcoming spring.

Two of the team's juniors will lead the AMCATS this season, Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, NY) and Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA).

“Our coaching staff is extremely excited to have these two as our captains for this season. Their passion for the game, genuine care for each other, and their hard work in the classroom and on the field exemplifies everything we stand for. I am very proud of this team, especially these captains, for the way they represent Anna Maria and the program. I look forward to a successful and thrilling 2021 season with them leading the way!” Coach Sasso said.

Coach Sasso added, “effective leaders influence others to achieve a common goal. What is impressive about these two captains is their desire to improve their skills and help others get better. They demonstrated leadership by serving the community, Anna Maria College, and their teammates. They have good character, work ethic, humble, and attract the same individuals to this team. These two captains will have a tremendous impact on the field and be a driving force that will take this team to new heights this season.”

Ashley Garcia (Ash) will be playing in her third season for the AMCATS this year. Ashley has been a captain since the end of her freshman season. She has started every game and has been to every team practice and event.  This past season Ashley earned the title of “Most Valuable Player” while overcoming two potentially season-ending surgeries on her wrist. She loves the game, no one works harder, and she is always prepared to play any position when called on. This past shortened-season, Ash recorded 72 putouts at first base, with a 1.000 fielding percentage. In her freshman year, she hit two home runs and had a batting average of .348, starting in all 29 games. Ashley is healthy, strong, and determined. We expect her to be a power hitter at the plate and an essential part of our defensive lineup!

Sabrina Liston (Sab) will be playing in her second season this year in the AMC uniform since joining us as a transfer student her sophomore year. Sab will also be a captain for a second year. Last fall, Sab had to work hard rehabbing a potentially career-ending knee injury. She worked hard enough to find her way back to the field and be our ace in the circle. Sabrina’s will to compete, love of the game, and leadership ability was a major reason for her being able to get back in the game.  This past Spring, Sab pitched a 5-inning shortened game leading our team to a victory in Ft. Myers, Florida, over Elms College 21-7. She struck out four batters, allowing only two earned runs. Sab is also healthy, strong, and focused. We are expecting Sab to be a tremendous pitcher this year and to be a great hitter too!

The Anna Maria College Softball team will be opening their season on March 6, 2021, playing Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The AMCATS will play their home opener on Friday, April 2, against Fisher College.
