Men’s Basketball Comes Back To Beat Amherst 82-79 In OT

AMHERST, MA. – On Friday, November 10th the Anna Maria College men's basketball team traveled to Amherst, MA to take on the Amherst College Mammoth for a non-conference matchup. The AMCATS won the game 82-79.

After a slow first half, the AMCATS would go into halftime trailing behind the Mammoth 52-34. Amherst started things strong in the second half however the AMCATS began to pick up the pace about ten minutes into the half. The AMCATS took control of the last ten minutes of regulation and held the Mammoth to just 17 points in the second half. The AMCATS would surge  past the Mammoth with a pair of free throw points from Gabe Armstead putting the AMCATS up 68-67 over the Mammoth with just seconds left to play. Another free throw from Malakhi Knight increased the AMCATS lead to 69-67 forcing a pair of timeouts for the Mammoth. The game would come right down to the wire as the Mammoth managed a layup for two points to tie the game up 69-69 with just five seconds left to spare.

In overtime the AMCATS kept things close before taking the lead with just under a minute left to play as Ray Carter Jr. secured two points for the AMCATS on the free throw line. With the Mammoth trailing 81-79, the AMCATS added some security to their lead with yet another made free throw from Carter Jr. to make it an 82-79 game with ten seconds left on the clock. The AMCATS spent the next ten seconds locking down the defensive end to help run the clock down to zero giving them their first win of the season in dramatic fashion.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Gabe Armstead led the AMCATS with 20 points including a perfect showing on the free throw line going 10 for 10.
  • Ray Carter Jr. tallied an impressive 18 points going 5-8 on the free throw line for the AMCATS.
  • This marks the AMCATS first win over the Mammoth in their last 6 meetings.
