Football Falls To Salve 37-34 In New England Bowl

NEWPORT, RI. – On Saturday, November 18th the Anna Maria College Football team traveled to Newport, RI to take on the Salve Regina Seahawks for the New England Bowl. The AMCATS lost the game 37-34.

The AMCATS set the tone for the game with a touchdown from David Robinson just under five minutes into the first quarter. Missing the extra point opportunity, the AMCATS led over the Seahawks 6-0. Salve wouldn't find themselves up on the board until late in the first quarter when Josh Letellier scored off an 18 yard pass from Jake Stack. Another missed extra point opportunity made it a 6-6 game as the first quarter came to a close.

The Seahawks would take the lead early in the second quarter with Vaughn Randall kicking a 22 yard field goal making it a 9-6 game. A nine yard run from Jamal Cariglia gave the AMCATS the upper hand over the Seahawks as the AMCATS took a 12-9 lead with just over nine minutes left to play in the first half. Just as it appears that the first half was coming to a close, the Seahawks managed to score on a two yard run from Thomas Cea Jr. as the clock hit zero, giving Salve the four point lead going into the second half.

The Seahawks took control of the third quarter scoring two touchdowns in the first nine minutes of the second half. The touchdowns came from Kyle Crampton off a 24 yard pass from Sam Capodice. The Seahawks second touchdown of the third quarter came off a 4 yard run from Matthew Lavoie making it a 30-12 game. Despite the Seahawks building up a commanding lead, the AMCATS remained undeterred with Uthman Ajia scoring off a 7 yard pass from Ryan Russell to cut the Salve lead to ten points. 

The Seahawks wasted no time starting the fourth quarter with Matthew Lavoie scoring on a two yard run just 42 seconds into the quarter. Trailing by 17 points, the AMCATS managed a strong push throughout the final quarter starting with a touchdown from Jamal Cariglia with 12 minutes left to play. Cariglia would score again for the AMCATS just six minutes later off a 1 yard run to make it a 37-34 game. With six minutes left to play, the AMCATS trail by three points. The Seahawks would hold the AMCATS at bay however hanging on to the lead as the clock wound down to zero. The AMCATS closed out their season with a record of 5-5.
