Football Hold On Against Corsairs 63-48

PAXTON, MA: The Anna Maria College football team opened their 2022 season when they took on UMass-Dartmouth in a non-conference matchup today at Caparso Field. The AMCATS broke out early and were leading the Corsairs 28-0 with just under 10 minutes to go in the second quarter. The AMCATS then held on to win a barn burner of a game 63-48.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The AMCATS opening drive included a 58-yard pass from senior Alex Cohen (Plymouth, MA) to Justin McMillian (Middletown, CT) and another to Hayden Braga (Foster, RI) for 23 that set up Cohen's two-yard TD run.
• Two 49-yard touchdown pass plays from Cohen to Devin Tolbert (Salem, MA) and Deandre Wallace (Waterbury, CT) plus an 11-yard passing TD to McMillian made the score 28-0 with 9:28 to go in the second quarter.
• Cohen accounted for eight touchdowns on the day, six through the air and two more on the ground. He was 14-29 for 414 passing yards.
• Sophomore QB Ryan Russell (West Springfield, MA) came on for an injured Cohen late in the fourth quarter and added another touchdown with his legs.
• The AMCATS had three different receivers with at least 80 receiving yards and were led by McMillian with five catches for 184 yards and four touchdowns.
• Tolbert led all receivers with seven catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.
• Wallace made three catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.
• Cohen's six passsing touchdowns and eight touchdowns set new school records in a game while McMillian's four receiving touchdowns in a game also set a new school record.
• The AMCATS opening season win marks the first time in school history the football program begins the season 1-0.

Anna Maria will be in action again on Saturday when they will travel to Clean Harbors Stadium in Buzzards Bay, MA to play the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The teams will take the field for a 1 PM kickoff.
