Sam Jakana Named ECFC Special Teams Player Of The Week

KILLINGWORTH, Conn..– Anna Maria College sophomore linebacker Sam Jakana (Coto De Caza, Calif.), was named the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Special Teams Player of the Week for games played through Saturday, September 17.
 
Jakana, had the game-changing TD in Anna Maria's thrilling 23-14 come-from-behind  road win against Mass. Maritime. He punched home a 22-yard scoop and score with 15-seconds remaining in the first half thanks to a forced fumble by Armstrong Antoine (Stratford, Conn.) off the kickoff to put the AMCATS within two points (14-12). Defensively, Jakana notched four tackles (2 solo, 1 TFL) from the linebacker position and added two pass breakups in the victory.

The AMCATS won their second game in a row to start the 2022 season 2-0 for the first time in program history coming off claiming the 2021 ECFC Championship and making the program's first ever trip to the NCAA playoffs. This marks the second time in Jakana's career he has recieved ECFC player of the week honors. He was named the defensive player of the week for week 8 in 2021.

About the ECFC

The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference was formed in the spring of 2009 as an NCAA Division III single-sport football conference. The conference, named after the geographic location of the institutions began competition in the fall of 2009.

Current members are Alfred State College (Alfred, NY), Anna Maria College (Worcester, MA), Castleton University (Castleton, VT.), Dean College (Franklin, MA), Gallaudet University (Washington, D.C.), Keystone College (La Plume, PA), and Maritime College State University of New York (Throggs Neck, NY).

The mission of the conference is to:

  1. Promote intercollegiate varsity football as an integral part of the educational experience of all competitors. 
  2. Establish a conference schedule and determine a conference championship that will represent the conference as the automatic qualifier to the NCAA national tournament.
  3. Adopt sportsmanship, fair play, moral integrity, and competitive excellence as cornerstones of the conference.
