Men’s Hockey Sweeps Roos At Home

AUBURN, MA. – On Friday, February 2nd and Saturday February 3rd, the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team hosted the SUNY Canton Roos for doubleheader! The AMCATS won game one 6-2 and game two 5-3.

Game One: The AMCATS started their weekend off strong with a goal less than two minutes into the first period of game one. The goal came off the stick of Jeremy Dewar for his first career NCAA goal. The Roos would jump early as well as they quickly tied the game up just two minutes later. Back at even, the AMCATS put the pressure on the Canton defense as Guillaume Coulombe set up Matthew Gilbert to make it a 2-1 game with ten minutes left to go in the first. As time slowly ran out in the period, the AMCATS managed to sneak one last goal in with just thirty seconds left on the clock. The goal came from Braeden McKinnon off the pass from August Bouveng. The AMCATS would close out the first period with a 3-1 lead over the Roos.

After a slow start to the second period, the AMCATS were back on the board with a pair of power play goals. The first goal came just under ten minutes into the period after Bryden Sinclair roofed the puck from the top of the circles. A minute later, Gilbert got in on the action with a quick cut in front of the crease for the AMCATS fifth goal of the night. The Roos would change goalies after the goal. Maintaining their four goal lead for the remainder of the second period, the AMCATS would lead into the third with a score of 5-1.

Despite a dominating start to the game, the Roos picked things up in the third period as they outshot the AMCATS 19-12. The pressure from Canton would result in a goal just under ten minutes into the third period to cut the AMCATS lead down to three. Unable to get anymore past Johnston, the Roos would be left to pull their goalie with a little over two minutes to play in the third. Pearce Baker would capitalize on the empty net opportunity scoring the AMCATS sixth goal of the night for a final score of 6-2.

Game Two: On Saturday, the AMCATS celebrated their senior night. Before the game, the team took a moment to recognize their six member of the senior class (Matthew Gilbert, August Bouveng, Samson Mouland, Tyler Lyewski, Guillaume Coulombe and Aiden Richardson). Despite the celebrations prior to the game, the AMCATS went down early to the Roos after a goal from Brendan Morrow came just two minutes into the first period. The Roos would make things even more difficult for the AMCATS as they scored yet another goal less than six minutes later leaving the AMCATS down 2-0 at the end of the first period.

Undeterred, the AMCATS jumped right back in the second period as Samson Mouland scored off a pass from Caleb Cathcart just five minutes into the second period. Trailing by just one goal, the AMCATS looked to tie things up as Cam Tobey managed to sneak one past the Roos goaltender off the side wall with less than two minutes left to play in the second period. Tied up a two a piece, the AMCATS would go into the third period with a clean slate.

Tobey drew first blood in the third period with a goal to give the AMCATS the lead just six minutes into the period. The AMCATS wouldn't stop there as a goal from Max Wennerberg off a pass from Max Pelletier increased the Cats lead to two goals. Nic Herringer would answer for the Roos shortly there after to make it a 4-3 game however an empty net goal from Mouland with less than twenty seconds left to play would secure the 5-3 win for the AMCATS.
