Men's Hockey Surges Past Huskies 5-2

AUBURN, MA. – On Saturday, December 9th the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team hosted the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Horgan Arena in Auburn, MA. The AMCATS won the game 5-2.

The Huskies were the first to strike with a goal from Mathieu Sabourin on the power play with seven minutes left to play in the first period. With less than a minute left to go, Braeden McKinnon tied the game up for the AMCATS. McKinnon was assisted by Guillaume Coulombe and Cam Tobey

Tied up at one a piece at the start of the second period, the AMCATS set the tone early after McKinnon buried his second goal of the night just four minutes into the period. Things wouldn't get better for the Huskies as a spearing penalty on goaltender Kyle Penton resulted in a five minute major as well as Penton getting ejected from the game about half way through the period. With a new goalie in net for the Huskies, the AMCATS capitalized on the power play as Coulombe tucked away the AMCATS third goal of the night making it a 3-1 game. Killing off the remainder of their five minute penalty, the Huskies managed to find the back of the net with just four minutes left in the second period, reducing the AMCATS lead back to just one goal. Less than a minute later however, the AMCATS came right back with a goal from Derek Raposo off a pass from McKinnon.

Leading 4-2 at the start of the third period, the AMCATS battled with the Huskies in an attempt to maintain control of the game. Despite being outshot by the Huskies, Matthew Hennessey stopped all 17 shots faced in the third period to help secure the win for the AMCATS. The game would close out with an empty net goal from Brandon Della Paolera with just under thirty seconds left on the clock, giving the AMCATS the 5-2 win over the Huskies.
