Men’s Hockey Drops Two In New York

SYRACUSE, NY. – On Friday, January 26th and Saturday, January 27th the Anna Maria College Men's Hockey team traveled to Syracuse, NY where they took on the SUNY Oswego Lakers and the SUNY Cortland Dragons. The AMCATS lost to the Lakers 5-3 and the Dragons 7-2.

Game One: The AMCATS faced off against the SUNY Oswego Lakers in game one of their road trip to New York. The Lakers were the first on the board after Tyler Flack scored off a pass from Quin Warmuth and Connor Gatto. The goal came with just under seven minutes left to play in the first period. Unable to score for the remainder of the first, the AMCATS headed into the second period trailing by one.

After some back and forth in the second period, the AMCATS finally broke the ice after Spencer Carpenter passed the puck up to Giovanni Perillo for a goal, just ten minutes into the period. Tied up at one goal a piece, the AMCATS managed to outshoot the Lakers throughout the rest of the period giving them the edge going into the third.

Almost two minutes into the third period, the Refs dished out a five minute major on Samson Mouland, putting the AMCATS on the penalty kill. After nearly killing off the entire penalty, the Lakers managed to score two quick goals twenty seconds apart from each other to give them a 3-1 lead just under seven minutes into the period. The Lakers would tack on another goal just minutes later to increase their lead to 4-1. However the AMCATS were not done yet as Cam Tobey and Justin Taylor set up Guillaume Coulombe as he put the puck in right over the shoulder of Brandon Milberg to make it a 4-2 game. Just seconds later, the AMCATS would answer yet again with Derek Raposo setting up Pearce Baker to cut the Lakers lead down to just one. With nearly eight minutes left to play in the third period, the AMCATS scratched and clawed for the game tying goal however the Lakers wouldn't allow it as they scored a late empty net goal to add some insurance as the game came to a close with a score of 5-3 in favor of the Lakers.

Game Two: The AMCATS second game of the weekend came against the SUNY Cortland Dragons. Cortland jumped on the AMCATS early, outshooting them 28-10 in the first period. With the Help of Matthew Hennessey, the AMCATS only gave up one goal in the period.

Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second period, the AMCATS took a five minute major penalty with two minutes left to play in the first period, with the final three minutes of the penalty carrying over into the second. The Dragons jumped early scoring their second goal of the night just under two minutes into the second period. While their third goal came just over a minute later, making it a 3-0 game just minutes into the period. The Dragons didn't finish there as they tucked away their fourth straight goal just under five minutes into the second period. It was just over halfway through the period that the AMCATS finally scored their first goal of the game off the stick of Matthew Gilbert. The goal wasn't enough to build up a run as the Dragons came right back just three minutes later to bring their lead back to four. As time on the clock wound down, the AMCATS managed one more goal in the second period as Derek Raposo found himself on a breakaway right out of the penalty box to score the AMCATS second goal of the evening making it a 5-2 game as they entered the second intermission.

Unable to build any momentum off of their late goal in the second period, the AMCATS were met with an early third period goal from the Dragons to make it a 6-2 game. The Dragons would tack on their seventh and final goal of the night with eight minutes left to go in regulation. As the clock hit zero, the AMCATS trailed behind the Dragons 7-2, closing out their roadtrip to New York 0-2.
