Clark Clips Anna Maria in Field Hockey

Worcester, Mass. – Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) erupted for four goals and classmate Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) added a goal and three assists as host Clark University blanked visiting Anna Maria 6-0 in non-league field hockey action on Tuesday evening.

The win pushes the Cougars' record to 4-3, while the AMCATS dip to 5-5 after having won four of their last five.

Clark wasted little time getting on the board as Lutts fed Kelsey Renner (Waldorf, Md.) for the game's first goal and the first of her career at 8:27.

Melkonian recorded her first goal of the night with some nifty stick handling. She weaved through a couple of defenders before unleashing a blast that banged the back of the cage, upping the Cougar edge to 2-0 at the 24:33 mark.

Lutts and Melkonian connected for a goal in the 31st minute when Lutts sent a pass through traffic that found its way to Melkonian and she tapped it in for a 3-0 halftime edge.

That same duo put Clark's fourth goal of the game on the board at 42:35, giving Melkonian her fourth hat trick of the season and the 19th of her career.

She added another score on an unassisted blast in the 59th minute making the score 5-0. Lutts then teamed up Stacey Kraucunas (Enfield, Conn.) for her career-high 11th score of the season at 65:36.

Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, Maine) didn't need to make any saves to record her first career shutout.

Anna Maria, meanwhile, only had one shot on the night, that coming off of the stick of Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) midway through the first half.

Clark will continue its busy week of play with a visit from Western New England on Thursday, while Anna Maria hosts Thomas College on Sunday.
