Looney, Lapierre Claim NECC Awards

Paxton, Mass. – Senior Shannon Looney (Leicester, Mass.) was named the New England Collegiate Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while teammate freshman Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) scored the NECC Rookie of the Week award as announce by the conference on Monday morning.

It is the second straight week that Anna Maria has swept the awards, last week Marybeth McClune (Worcester, Mass.) and Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, NH) received recognition.

Looney was a stalwart on defense for the AMCATS in a 1-0 non-conference win over Elms College. The senior halfback picked up the assist on the game winning goal with a piercing drive from the top of the circle to the streaking Kayla Lapierre for the score. Looney helped limit the Blazers to just three shots on net and was the number one defender on all three Elms' penalty corners.

Lapierre tallied her second game winning goal of the season with less than four minutes remaining to give AMC the win. The first year player one-timed a sweet cross pass from Looney and deposited it weak side for the victory.

It was the only game of the week for the AMCATS who have won four out of their last five games. AMC improved to 2-1 at home and 5-4 overall.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Clark University for a 7pm tilt.
