WPI Tops Field Hockey, 2-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team suffered a 2-0 non-conference loss to the Engineers of WPI on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the loss, Anna Maria falls to 11-6, while the win boosts WPI to 5-9.

STREAK EXTENDED

WPI extends its winning streak to two games against the AMCATS, as the Engineers also posted a 2-0 win against Anna Maria last season. The AMCATS last win against WPI was a 2-0 score in 2005.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first half, the Engineers found gaps in the AMCAT defense twice in the second frame to take the win. The AMCATS were outshot 11-6 in the first half but held close in the second, trailing just 11-9 in shots.

Anna Maria put nine shots on-goal over the course of the game, including a rocket by Katie Moran (Leicester, Mass.) in the second half that was stopped on a diving save by WPI goaltender Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.). In the first half, Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) had a chance to put the AMCATS on the board on an open breakaway, but Puishys stopped that one with a quick kick save.

Moran, Dalbec, and Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) all finished with three shots-on-goal each.

SCORING

In the 43rd minute, Allie Buckley (Worcester, Mass.) stuffed in a shot into the left pocket following a scramble in front of the net. Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, Conn.) assisted on the game-winning score.

Almost seven minutes later, the Engineers added a second tally as Hope Shevuchuk (Burlignton, Conn.) passed the ball in from the top of the circle and fed Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, Mass.), who was waiting for the pass on the left and promptly tipped in the shot.

GOALTENDERS

Puishys tallied nine saves to protect her shutout victory, while Anna Maria netminder Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) totaled 14 saves in defeat.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS host an important Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest against Johnson & Wales on Saturday at noon. A brief senior day ceremony will precede the game. WPI is on the road on Saturday for a noon battle with Wheaton.
