Field Hockey Downs Mount Ida, 3-0, in GNAC Opener

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team downed the visiting Mustangs of Mount Ida College 3-0 on Thursday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

With today's win, the AMCATS improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in GNAC play, while the loss drops Mount Ida to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league action.

SHUTOUT STREAK

It marks the third-straight shutout victory for Anna Maria dating back to last weekend's 2-0 win against New England College and encompassing Tuesday's 3-0 win against Elms.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The AMCATS scored in the second minute of the game and never looked back, adding additional tallies in the ninth and 38th minutes en route to the 3-0 shutout win. The AMCATS held a 19-9 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in penalty corners over the course of the game.

Only two of Mount Ida's nine shots were on-target today, as both starting goaltender Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) and reliever Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) made one save each.

Eleven of Anna Maria's shots were on-goal, and Mount Ida netminder Emily McConnell tallied eight saves in the complete-game effort.

SCORING

First Half: Anna Maria wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.) connected on a pass from Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) 1:49 into the game to net the first goal.

At the 8:04 mark, Lapierre scored her first goal of the day on an unassisted, deep breakaway down the far sideline to give the AMCATS a 2-0 lead at halftime.
