AMCATS drop 2-1 Battle to Saint Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine—The Anna Maria College field hockey team ended  their four game winning streak with a 2-1 conference loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the AMCATS drop to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play. The Monks of Saint Joseph's improve to 6-1 overall and remain undefeated in the conference with a record of 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks commanded the offense as they put together four shots on net within the first 12 minutes of play. As things got messy in front of the AMCAT goal the Monks were awarded a stroke at the 12:25 mark. In the high stakes position the Monks decided to send defender Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H.) to the line as she was able to find the top left corner of the net to put Saint Joseph's up 1-0. The Monks took a total of 11 shots in the first half to Anna Maria's five. The stroke would be the only ball to find its way into the net in the first half as both teams entered half time with the score 1-0. Both teams came out strong in the second half battling it out in the midfield. The AMCATS were able to tie it up in the 45th minute of play but 10 minutes later the Monks found the back of the net once again to settle the score at a final of 2-1.  The Monks held a commanding lead in total shots with 22 to Anna Maria's eight. They also lead statistics in penalty corners with 13 and held the AMCATS to three.

SCORING

First Half: The loan goal of the first half came from a Saint Joseph's stroke as Williams clinched the first lead of the game for the Monks 12 minutes into the first half. She placed the ball past AMCAT keeper, Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) into the top left corner.

Second Half: The AMCATS tied the game at 1-1 after 10 minutes of play in the second half as Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.) received a pass from teammate Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) and put the ball to the back of the net. The Monks responded in the 54th minute of play as Michalia Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored off an assist from teammate Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) to settle the score at 2-1 for the day.

GOALTENDERS

Anna Maria's starting netminder, senior Mary Kate Breen tallied 12 saves in the loss. The Monks goalkeeper, Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) picked up the conference victory stopping four shots on the day.
