Field Hockey Suffers 6-1 Loss to Sharks

BOSTON, Mass. – The Anna Maria College field hockey team dropped a 6-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup to the Sharks of Simmons College on Saturday evening. The loss sets the AMCATS back to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play while Simmons improves to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the GNAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sharks controlled the game and took a commanding lead before the halftime break with three goals. Their dominance on offense continued into the second half as they tallied three more goals and only let up one. Overall Simmons held an 18-10 advantage in total shots on the day. Their forward push would not let up as they spent a great deal of time in the AMCATS defensive end and forced 13 penalty corners to Anna Maria's eight.

SCORING

First Half: The game remained scoreless until the ninth minute of play when Simmon's forward, Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) carried the ball to left side of the circle and swept it backhand into the net for her 12th goal of the season. Following a scramble in front of the AMCATS net, a penalty stroke was called and the Sharks sent senior defender Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) to the line. Oliver tallied her first goal of the season as she put the stroke past AMCAT netminder, Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.). The last goal of the half came with just five minutes remaining on the clock as Simmon's Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) carried the ball along the end line finding a opening to cross it to teammate Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) who put it in the net for her 6th goal of the season.

Second Half: The second half opened with an AMCAT offensive push as the team saw shots by Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) and Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.). Following a foul on the Sharks the AMCATS took advantage of a scoring opportunity as Lauren Beauregard (Hubbardston, Mass.) received a pass across the cage from teammate Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) and put away her 14th goal of the season into the right post.

The Sharks responded quickly as Rondeau put away her second goal of the game as a cross came from Amy Wilson (Falmouth, Mass.) from the top of the circle to left post for a one-timer into the net. In the 48th minute of play Simmons tallied their fifth goal of the game as Wilson scored off of a rebound in front of left post for her first goal of the season. The scoring capped off with 11 minutes left on the clock as Jill Mercer (Dartmouth, Mass.) tipped in a blocked shot in front of the left post.
