Field Hockey Downs Bears 4-3 in Double Overtime Thriller

PAXTON, Mass.—Sophomore forward Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.) tapped in the game-winning goal in the 95th minute of play to lead the Anna Maria College field hockey team to a 4-3 double-overtime win against the Bears of Bridgewater State University on Thursday evening in non-conference action.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 7-4, while the loss drops the Bears to 5-4.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anna Maria took an early lead and carried it through halftime, but Clark held a 3-1 scoring edge in the second half to force overtime. The first overtime period was scoreless and saw two saves by AMC goalkeeper Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) to keep the game alive.
Ten minutes into the second overtime period, Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) sent the ball across the front of the net to Denver, who netted the game-winner to clinch the victory.
 

The AMCATS sealed the win despite the Bears 31-23 edge in total shots and 14-10 advantage in penalty corners.

 

SCORING

First Half: Anna Maria held a 2-0 scoring edge in the first half with the first goal coming just 1:22 into the game as Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) found teammate Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) on the right side of the net and Lapierre put the ball to the back of the net. With just 30 seconds remaining in the second half the AMCATS earned an insurance goal going into halftime as Denver netted her 8th goal of the season after receiving a pass from Kayla Lapierre.
 

Second Half: In the 37th minute of play Bridgewater netted their first goal of the game as senior forward Brittney Field (Hubbardston, Mass.) received a pass from teammate Kelsey Kiely (Mansfield, Mass.) and put the ball past Breen for her 3rd goal of the season. The AMCATS responded quickly as Dalbec netted her 6th goal of the season just ten minutes later following a cross pass from Jacqueline Lapierre. At the 57:54 mark Bridgewater tightened the AMCAT lead to 3-2 as freshman forward Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) put one past Breen. The Bears held on to this momentum and kept the pressure on in the AMCATS defensive end. In the 63rd minute of play the Bears netted what would be the final goal of regulation as Kiely scored her 2nd goal of the game assisting on the goal was senior Emily Mosca (Dedham, Mass.).

 
Second Overtime: With just five minutes remaining in the second overtime of the night, Anna Maria's Nicole Denver netted her 9th goal of the season to give the AMCATS their second double overtime victory of the season.
 

GOALKEEPERS

Mary Kate Breen totaled and impressive 23 saves in the victory for the AMCATS, while Bridgewater's netminder Kaylyn Allahyarian (Norwell, Mass.) totaled ten saves in the loss.
