Baseball’s Magical Season Ends In GNAC Semifinals

STANDISH, ME: The Anna Maria College baseball team saw their 2022 season – arguably the best in school history – come to an end on Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) semifinals hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine, falling 4-0 to the host Monks.

GAME SUMMARY:

  • Playing against the top-seeded Monks, AMCAT freshman left-handed pitcher Michael Shorey (Northbridge, MA) went six and two-thirds innings for Anna Maria, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four.
  • SJC freshman right-handed pitcher Jason Johnson (Thomaston, CT) went seven and one-third innings for the Monks, striking out four AMCATS and allowing no runs.
  • SJC junior catcher Jonathan Dube (Rochester, NH) drove in two runs in the bottom of the first on a single, then later drove in a third in the top of the eighth off an error.

A YEAR FOR THE RECORD BOOKS:

  • The 2022 season saw the AMCATS set a new standard for the program for years to come. The team set modern school records in wins (23), runs (289) and home runs (31).
  • Senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) and senior right-fielder pitcher Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) both finished tied for the team lead in hits this season at 60. That mark places them tied at second all-time in school history, eclipsing the previous mark of 54. They are likewise tied for second all-time in career triples with seven apiece.
  • Shell, the 2022 Anna Maria College Breakout Athlete of the Year, tied the single-season record for triples in a season with five. His 178 hits and 95 total bases this season rank him third all-time and he is tied for fourth for doubles with 12. He ends his career as Anna Maria's all-time leader in career stolen bases at 34 and is second all-time in school history in career doubles with 42, and tied for fourth in career home runs with 12. and is tied for third all-time in career total bases with 270.
  • Drosidis, the 2022 Anna Maria College Male Athlete of the Year with a season of eligibility remaining, has etched his name into the AMCAT record books, setting the school's all-time record in career home runs with 20, shattering the previous mark by six. He is currently first all-time in career slugging (.637) and is second all-time in career batting average (.384), runs batted in (120) and on-base percentage (.458) while ranking third in hits (170) and fourth in runs scored (111). His fourteen doubles this year were the second most in school history while he ranked third in home runs in a season with seven and is fourth in runs batted in (37).
  • Junior transfer designated hitter Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, CT) led the AMCATS with 39 RBIs in just his first season at Anna Maria, tied for second all-time. His seven home runs matched Drosidis' total at third all-time.
  • Junior transfer centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) broke the school single-season record in stolen bases with 29, crushing the previous school record of 20. Dunithan's 42 runs scored were also second-most by an AMCAT in a season.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Choate (Grafton, MA) was named NCBWA Rookie of the Week twice, the GNAC Rookie of the Week three times, and the GNAC Pitcher of the Week twice.
  • Anna Maria senior right-handed pitcher Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) finished his career with 250 strikeouts, the most in AMCAT history
