NEW LONDON, NH: The Anna Maria College baseball team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a pair of wins at Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at Kelsey Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game 1: Fili Veras (Sleepy Hollow, NY) threw a complete game one-hitter to even his record at 2-2. In the top of the first inning, junior left fielder James Powers (Folsom, CA) singled home senior right-fielder Jason Shell from third base after he tripled two batters earlier to give Veras all the run support he would need.
  • Game 2: The AMCATS came back from a three-run deficit to force extra innings. In the extra frame, the AMCATS used three hits and an error to score three runs for the win. Powers and Shell each had an RBI single sandwiched around an RBI double down the left-field line by senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA)

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The top four batters in the AMCAT lineup accounted for 20 of the team's 29 hits on the afternoon. In the first game alone the top 4 were 10-17, (.588 average).
  • 11 of the AMCAT's 29 hits went for extra bases. Drosidis lead the way with four doubles (three in game two alone).
  • Shell increased his GNAC leading homerun total to four with an inside-the-park shot in the sixth inning of game two. His four RBI also increased his GNAC leading total to 16 on the year.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Bob Ross (Rochester, MA) threw three innings of one-hit relief in game two to earn the win and improve his record to 2-0. Ross followed Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) who struck out seven over the first five innings.
  • Freshman first basemen Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) had two hits on the day, including a two-run double in the first game.
  • Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, NY) and Ben Mensch (Tampa, FL) drove in two runs each for the Chargers in game two.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Clark University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
