Baseball Turns To Small Ball To Coast Past Gothic Knights

DAVENPORT, FL: The Anna Maria College baseball team picked up a 13-5 over New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport.

 

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, March 5, 2022
  • Score: Anna Maria 13, NJCU 5
  • Records: AMCATS of Anna Maria 2-1 | Gothic Knights of NJCU 1-2            

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Down 4-0 going into the top of the fourth, the AMCATS exploded for five runs in that inning, scoring off an RBI groundout, two wild pitches, and RBI single from senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA), and an error with the bases loaded.  
  • In the fifth inning, Anna Maria sophomore second baseman Luke Halunen (Carver, MA) increased the lead with an RBI groundout to drive in senior catcher Noah Holland (Sandwich, MA) as the AMCATS went up 6-4
  • In the sixth, Holland hit an RBI single to centerfield to drive in junior left fielder James Powers (Folsom, CA).
  • Up 7-5 in the seventh, Powers' RBI single drove in senior designated hitter Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA).
  • In the top of the eighth, the AMCATS exploited miscues by the Gothic Knights to score three runs and increase their lead to 11-5.
  • Finally, in the top of the ninth, Drosidis hit an RBI groundout as junior pinch hitter Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, CT) scored from third for his first career run as an AMCAT. Junior centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) later scored off a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring.
  • Anna Maria freshman left-handed pitcher Michael Shorey (Northbridge, MA) came into the game in relief and pitched four shutout innings, striking out five Gothic Knights.
  • Anna Maria senior right fielder Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) had a team-high three hits on the day, while Powers drew three walks.
