Baseball Splits At Albertus Magnus

HAMDEN, CT: The Anna Maria College baseball team split their Tuesday evening double-header at Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action in Hamden, Connecticut, winning game one, 7-3, before falling short in game two, 5-4.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, April 5, 2022
  • Records: Falcons of Albertus Magnus 2-14, 2-4 GNAC | AMCATS of Anna Maria 14-9, 5-1 GNAC

TURNING POINTS:

  • Game one was a thriller, as the contest scheduled for seven innings went ten. Junior designated hitter Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, CT) finally broke the 3-3 in the top of the tenth, coming to the plate with the bases loaded and launching his second home run of the year over the left field wall for a grand slam as the AMCATS took it 7-4.
  • Game two was once again another nail-biter. Anna Maria entered the bottom of the seventh leading 4-3, only to watch Albertus Magnus rally, tying it on a solo home run before winning 5-4 on a walk-off wild pitch.

AMCAT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Spataj finished the day with a combined six runs batted in, four hits, a home run, a double and a sacrifice fly. He scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth of game two to give the AMCATS their first lead of the game.
  • Senior right-fielder Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) had three hits in game one and the go-ahead RBI in game two.
  • Junior left-fielder James Powers (Folsom, CA) finished with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored in game one.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Choate (Grafton, MA) was lights out in game one, pitching four innings of no-hit ball in relief and striking out nine Falcons for his first career win.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) struck out a career-high 12 batters in game two, allowing just five hits in six-and-two-thirds innings.

Anna Maria will be back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Curry College for a 3:00 p.m. game.
