MANSFIELD, CT: The Anna Maria College baseball team lost to Eastern Connecticut State University at the Mansfield Outdoor Athletic Complex in Mansfield. The ECSU Warriors entered play today as the second-ranked team in the country according to D3baseball.com/NCBWA.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the first-ever matchup between the AMCATS and the Warriors, the loan AMCAT highlight was provided by junior second baseman James Powers. After a leadoff double from junior centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) and a hit-by-pitch to senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) doubled to left to bring home the AMCATS only runs of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Powers did his part to fill up the score sheet on the day. In addition to driving in both of the AMCAT runs, he also stole third after the run-scoring double before being stranded at third. He also accounted for two of the AMCATS six, thanks to a leadoff single in the second.
  • Dunithan's leadoff double in the third that set up the Powers RBIs was one of three multi-base hits for the AMCATS, the others belonging to Powers and senior right fielder Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA).
  • Warriors starting pitcher Tommy Benincaso improved to 2-0 on the year, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out eight.
  • Matt Malcom opened the scoring for the Warriors with a three-run first-inning home run. Malcom finished the game with six runs batted in, adding a sacrifice fly in the third and a two-run single in the fifth.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Saturday when they will travel to Saint Joseph's (ME) for a double-header. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
