Baseball Comes Back To Take Down Cougars

WORCESTER, MA: The Anna Maria College baseball team won on Sunday at Granger Field in Worcester.

THE BASICS:

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing 5-2 entering the sixth inning, the AMCATS powered back behind a pair of two-run home runs. The first, in the sixth inning was by senior catcher Noah Holland (Sandwich, MA) scoring freshman first basemen Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) and cutting the Cougars' lead to a single run. Two innings later it was junior designated hitter Elijah Spataj homering to left and scoring Holland to give the AMCATS their first lead of the day.
  • After the Cougars tied the game again in the bottom of the eighth, the AMCATS came back in the top of the ninth. Senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) lead off the inning with a walk before moving to second on a ground out to first by James Powers (Folsom, CA). Rosenberg was able to move him to third with a single to right field. Holland then came through with his third RBI of the day, scoring Drosidis with a single to left field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Powers hit his first homerun of the season in the fourth inning, tying the game at two.
  • Rosenberg and Holland each had three hits on the day. Holland scored one run, while Rosenberg crossed the plate twice.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) earned the win, giving up one hit and one run in two innings. Marzec struck out five cougars, including the final two batters to close out the game.
  • The AMCATS pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts, giving them double digits in four of their last five games.
  • Randall Safron (Easthampton, MA) and Anthony LoCasto (New Rochelle, NY) each had home runs for the Cougars.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Wednesday when they will wrap up their run of five straight road games by traveling to Mitchell College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
