Baseball Shuts Down Norwich In Prep For GNACs

WORCESTER, MA: The Anna Maria College baseball team wrapped up their 2022 regular season in resounding fashion with a double-header sweep of visiting Norwich University on Friday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) a+ction played at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. The AMCATS shutout the Cadets in game one, 11-0, before pulling away in game two, 12-3.

The AMCATS have won 23 games for the first time in school history, and have put themselves in the driver's seat for the number two seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship playoffs pending the results of the remaining league games on Saturday.

TOP 'CATS:

  • Senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) – the reigning GNAC Player of the Year and Anna Maria's all-time leader in career home runs – capped off his resume with another spectacular performance as he ripped out five hits on the day, including a three-run blast to left field to cap off a nine-run first inning to game one. Drosidis drove in four runs and scored two more on the day.
  • Senior right-fielder Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) also racked up five hits including a pair of doubles and a walk from the leadoff spot and two RBI base hits.
  • Junior designated hitter Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, CT) drove in five runs on the day, homering in both games. Spataj now leads the AMCATS with six home runs on the season and a team-high 37 runs batted in in just 34 games.
  • Senior catcher Noah Holland (Sandwich, MA) drove in two runs on a single to left-center in the bottom of the first of game one, the first of a four-hit day.
  • Junior left-fielder James Powers (Folsom, CA) finished his day with three hits, four runs and two runs batted in.
  • Junior centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) crossed home plate five times on Friday while continuing to tear through the AMCAT single-season stolen base record, snatching two more bases.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Choate (Grafton, MA) continued his incredible rookie season, striking out 11 Cadets in a complete game shutout and allowing just two hits in his game one victory.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) picked up his fourth win of the season, striking out nine in six innings.
