Women’s Ice Hockey Draws Rivier On Senior Night

MARLBORO, MA: The Anna Maria College women's ice hockey team played visiting Rivier University to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening in Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) action at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Friday, February 11, 2022
  • Score: Anna Maria 1, Rivier 1 (OT)
  • Records: AMCATS of Anna Maria 7-8-2, 3-1-1 ECHA | Raiders of Rivier 1-12-3, 0-2-1 ECHA

SENIOR NIGHT:

  • Prior to the game, the AMCATS recognized their graduating senior class as part of senior night. The senior trio of forward Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA), forward Niamh Cote (Tewksbury, MA) and defender Jacqueline Howlett (North Haven, CT) were honored by coaches, teammates, family members and fans for their time with the women's ice hockey program. All three of these student-athletes have each made outstanding contributions not only on the ice but to the entire Anna Maria campus community as a whole. Under their leadership on the ice, the program has won more games this season – their fourth in existence - than in their first three seasons combined. Although their time with the program may be ending they will forever be a part of the AMCAT family.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first period, Rivier freshman forward Margaret Dickson (Brewster, MA) got the Raiders on the board with a shot past the goalie 11:11 into the second, assisted by freshman forward Angeline Rasby (Rapid City, SD).
  • Trailing 1-0 midway through the third period, the AMCATS found the equalizer, as Anna Maria junior forward Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by freshman forward Carly Drew (Rochester, MA) and freshman forward Raven Carriere (Labroquerie West, MB) to ultimately send the game into overtime.
  • In the extra period, a heroic defensive effort by the Anna Maria penalty-killing unit saw them hold off the Raiders, but they were unable to find the game-winner at the other end, settling for a 1-1 tied.
  • Rivier freshman goaltender Rachel Hinkley (Swedesboro, NJ) stopped 39 of 40 shots on goal, while Anna Maria junior goalkeeper Sam Dahill (Littleton, MA) finished with 12 saves.
