Lancers Surpass Women’s Ice Hockey In Worcester Showdown

MARLBORO, MA: The Anna Maria College women's ice hockey team lost 3-1 to visiting Worcester State University on Sunday evening in Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) action at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Sunday, November 28, 2021
  • Score: Worcester State 3, Anna Maria 1
  • Records: Lancers of Worcester State 5-2-1, 1-0-0 ECHA | AMCATS of Anna Maria 3-6-1, 2-1-0 ECHA

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lancers – controlling the action for much of the first period – struck first, with Worcester State sophomore forward Sydney Vautour (South Hamilton, MA) scoring her first goal of the season, assisted by senior forward Clare Conway (Billerica, MA) and junior forward Katie Puumala (Framingham, MA) to put the visitors up 1-0.
  • In the second period, Worcester State took a commanding 3-0 lead off goals from junior forward Shelby Reaugh (Raleigh, NC) and junior forward Emily Pavoni (Granby, MA).
  • Late in the third period, the AMCATS pulled the goalie and – taking advantage of a power play – found the back of the net, courtesy of junior defender Abigail Vigliotte (Medford, MA) who scored her team-leading third goal of the season, assisted by junior forward Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS). Anna Maria was within two with 1:28 to go.
  • Anna Maria was unable to complete the comeback as Worcester State sophomore forward Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, MA) scored an empty netter in the closing seconds for the final score.
  • Anna Maria junior goalkeeper Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC) finished with 30 saves on the night.
  • It was the first-ever meeting between the Worcester county rivals, as the Lancers of Worcester State are in their first year as a varsity program.
