NORTHFIELD, VT: On Saturday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball traveled to face off with the Norwich University Cadets for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Garrity Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Friday, April 28, 2023
  • Game 1: Anna Maria 0, Norwich 5
  • Game 2: Anna Maria 13, Norwich 2
  • Records: Anna Maria AMCATS 19-18 (13-5 GNAC) | Norwich University Cadets 11-22 (5-12 GNAC)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game #1
    • The AMCATS were sunk by a single rough inning in the first game. The Cadets scored five runs on three hits and an error.
    • Sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) had two of the AMCATS's four hits in the first game. The other two hits went to graduate student third baseman Nick Genatossio (Sutton, MA) and freshman left fielder AJ Guitron-Moore (Newport Harbor, CA). All four hits were singles.
  • Game 2
    • For as quiet as the AMCAT offense was in the first game, it came to life in the second game. The big hit was an eighth-inning grand slam by graduate student right fielder Jarrod Marifiote that pushed the AMCATS run total into double digits.
    • The AMCATS were the first ones on the scoreboard when senior center fielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) beat out an infield single to the shortstop that scored Rosenberg with two outs in the second inning.
    • Two innings later the AMCATS tacked on three more runs on an RBI single by senior designated hitter James Powers (Folsom, CA) that scored freshman catcher Brady Aylward (Southington, CT) and a two-run double by graduate student shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) that scored freshman third basemen David Doherty (North Smithfield, RI) and Guitron-Moore.
    • The every other inning pattern continued for the AMCATS in the sixth inning when they scored two more runs. The first scored on an RBI single to right center by Powers that scored Dunithan and the second was on an RBI single to left by Marifiote that scored Doherty.
    • After the Cadets finally broke through for two runs of their own to cut the AMCATS lead to 6-2, the AMACTS responded with seven runs in the top of the eighth, including the grand slam by Marifiote. Doherty led off the inning and was hit by a pitch and the Powers worked the pitcher for a walk before Drosidis loaded the bases on a bunt single. Marifiote then drove an 0-1 pitch beyond the right field wall for his sixth home run of the season.
    • After a pitching change, Aylward welcomed the new pitcher with a single into left field and freshman pinch hitter Dominic Brown (Sturbridge, MA) earned a walk before giving way to pinch runner Tommy Sasso (Grafton, MA). Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch before Genatossio took one for the team to load the bases. Another wild pitch would allow Aylward to score, while Sasso and Genatossio each moved up one base. Two batters later both then scored on a double to right center by Doherty.
    • Junior starting pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out nine and only allowing two runs.
