HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game #1
    • Junior starting pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) threw a complete game five-hit shutout for his fourth win of the season, striking out seven Blazers against only a single walk. The win improved Pingeton's record to 4-1 and extends his win streak to three games in his last three decisions.
    • The AMCATS put their first run on the board in the second inning when senior centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) led off with a single and was moved along to second on a sac bunt by freshman catcher Brady Aylward (Southington, CT) and to third when freshman third baseman David Doherty (North Smithfield, RI) grounded back to the pitcher. Freshman left fielder AJ Guitron-Moore was credited with the RBI single that scored Dunithan from third.
    • The AMCATS' big inning came when the hosts put up five runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Number nine hitter Guitron-Moore led off with a single and was followed by a single from senior designated hitter James Powers (Folsom, CA). Graduate student shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) reached on an error by the pitcher as Guitron-Moore came around to score and Powers moved to third. Graduate student right fielder Jarrod Mariotte (Framingham, MA) continued the hit parade with a single to right to bring home Powers and advance Drosidis. Sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) then moved both players into scoring position with a sac bunt back to the pitcher. Two batters later Dunithan capped the AMCATS scoring efforts with a two-run single into the left field gap.
  • Game 2
    • The AMCATS spotted the Blazers a pair of runs in the first inning but came back to score three runs of their own in the second inning. Doherty continued his hot hitting with a double that sliced down the left-field line. Two batters later Powers cashed in the scoring opportunity by scoring Doherty with a bloop single over the head of the third baseman into shallow left field. Drosidis then followed him with a double down the left field line putting both runners in scoring position. Marifiote then sent a 3-1 pitch into the left-center field gap bringing both upperclassmen around to score and put the AMCATS in front 3-2.
    • After the Blazers tied the game in the top of the third the AMCATS again put their second consecutive three spot up in the bottom half of the inning. Dunithan led off the inning with a bloop single into right field. Two batters later Aylward doubled over the head of the third baseman to set Doherty up with runners on second and third. Doherty cleared the bases with a double into the right-centerfield wall. Guitron-Moore then flipped a ball into left field to score Doherty with what would turn out to be the final run of the game.
    • Sophomore starting pitcher Michael Shorey (Northbridge, MA) went all nine innings for his second straight complete game. He allowed only three runs over nine innings while scattering nine hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter, completing the game on only 104 pitches, 75 for strikes.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Adding his three doubles in the two games today, Doherty's four doubles in conference play are good for second on the team, trailing only Drosidis who has six. All four of Doherty's doubles have also come in the AMCATS six conference games.
