Baseball Stampede Back from Five Runs Down Against Bison

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: On Tuesday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball team hosted the Nichols College Bison for a non-conference matchup at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, April 11, 2023
  • Score: Nichols 6, Anna Maria 7
  • Records: Nichols College Bison 7-16 | Anna Maria AMCATS 13-11

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Graduate student right-hand pitcher Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) threw five innings of one-run relief. Marzec sprinkled four hits across the five innings while striking out two and walking two, only allowing the single unearned run.
  • The AMCATS spotted the Bison a five-run lead through the first three and a half innings, but the game quickly began to turn around in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) opened the frame with a single through the right side. Graduate student right fielder Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA) then lifted a high fly ball into a strong wind that was blowing out to left-field and carried the ball over the left-centerfield wall, cutting the Bison lead to 5-2.
  • In the next inning, the Bison got two quick outs before senior designated hitter (Folsom, CA) doubled down the right field line on a 1-1 pitch and then slid in to second ahead of the throw from the right fielder. With Powers running on the 1-2 pitch, graduate student shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) lifted another fly ball into the jet stream heading down the left field line and the ball just continued to carry beyond the fence for a two-out two-run home run.
  • The AMCATS continued their power display to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman third baseman David Doherty (North Smithfield, RI) led off the inning with a single through the left side. Freshman left fielder AJ Guitron-Moore (New Port Harbor, CA) attempted to sacrifice bunt Doherty over to second but his bunt went back to the pitcher whose throw pulled the shortstop off the bag. One batter later Powers came to the plate with two runners on and lined the first pitch he saw over the AMCATS bullpen in left field.
