Baseball Smacks 14 Hits in 6-4 Win Over Colonels

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: On Wednesday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball team welcomed the Curry College Colonels for a non-conference matchup at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, March 22, 2023
  • Score: Curry 4, Anna Maria 6
  • Records: Curry College Colonels 3-8 | Anna Maria AMCATS 4-7

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS broke through for the first run of the game in the first inning behind a one-out triple for junior second baseman Christian Villa (Concord, CA) and an RBI single by graduate student designated hitter Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA).
  • In the second inning, the AMCATS doubled their lead when freshman shortstop David Doherty (North Smithfield, RI) led off with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior right fielder Tommy Sasso (Grafton, MA). Doherty moved to third on a single by senior catcher James Powers and scored on a sacrifice fly by Villa.
  • After a scoreless third inning, the AMCATS added another run in the fourth. With one out Powers walked and advanced when a pitch hit Villa. Marifiote recorded his second of three singles to load the bases for sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL).
  • The AMCATS were aided by the Colonels pitcher to add two more runs in the fifth. Freshman left fielder Dylan Morley (Riverview, FL) led off with his first collegiate hit. He moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a grounder back to the pitcher by graduate student third baseman Nick Genatossio (Sutton, MA), and scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later Sasso singled and scored what would end up the game-winning run from first on a double by Powers.
  • In the sixth the AMCATS scored what would be their final run of the day on a bases-loaded ground out to second by Genatossio after Rosenberg walked, senior center fielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) reached on an error, and Morley singled.
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Michael Shorey (Northbridge, MA) pitched the first four innings, allowing only three hits while striking out four and not allowing a run to improve his record to 2-1.
  • Freshman Connor Francesconi (Beverly, MA) closed out the final two innings only allowing a single hit and striking out two to record his first collegiate save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Morley was pressed into duty as a pinch runner in the bottom of the third and then stayed in to go 3-3 with hits in his first three collegiate at-bats.
  • Powers was on base in three of his four plate appearances with a single, a double, and a walk. He also added two stolen bases while scoring a run.
  • Morley and Powers were only two of the four AMCATS with multiple hits, being joined by Marifiote (2 for 5 with a double and an RBI) and Rosenberg (3 for 3 with a run scored and another driven in and a walk).
