Baseball Doubles Up the Falcons 6-3

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: On Thursday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball team welcomed the Fitchburg State Falcons for a non-conference matchup at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
  • Score: Fitchburg State 3, Anna Maria 6
  • Records: Fitchburg State University Falcons 6-4 | Anna Maria AMCATS 3-6

HIGHLIGHTS

  • In this one, the AMCATS did not need to wait long to get on the board. Senior centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) opened with an infield single before junior second baseman Christian Villa (Concord, CA) homered to straight away centerfield to give the AMCATS a 2-0 lead.
  • The AMCATS extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, freshman left fielder AJ Guitron-Moore (Harbor, CA) walked and proceeded to steal second and moved to third when the catcher's throw went into center field. After a walk by senior right fielder Tommy Sasso (Grafton, MA), freshman third baseman David Doherty (Smithfield, RI) brought Guitron-Moore home with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • After the Falcons tied the score in the top of the third, the AMCATS regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Villa was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a hit-and-run groundout to second by senior catcher James Powers (Folsom, CA). Villa then stole third and scored on a long sacrifice fly to right by graduate student designated hitter Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA).
  • Marifiote extended the AMCATS lead in the sixth inning when he homered to left field to lead off the inning.
  • The AMCATS tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with some help from the Falcons' defense. With one out, graduate student shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) was hit by a pitch and moved to second when sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg tapped one back to the pitcher. Guitron-Moore then hit a grounder to short that took a bad bounce and hit the shortstop in the chest allowing Drosidis to move to third and then score when the shortstop's throw to try and get Guitron-Moore at first went wide of the bag.
  • Junior starting pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) went six innings, allowing three earned runs while scattering five hits and striking out eight to improve his record to 2-1.
  • Graduate relief pitcher Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) threw three scoreless innings for his third save of the season.
