Mariners Fish Out Late Win Over Baseball

NEW LONDON, CT: On Wednesday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball team traveled for a non-conference matchup with the Mitchell College Mariners.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, April 5, 2023
  • Score: Anna Maria 5, Mitchell 6
  • Records: Anna Maria AMCATS 10-11 | Mitchell College Mariners 17-4

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior designated hitter James Powers (Folsom, CA) wasted little time putting the AMCATS in front early when he drove the fourth pitch of the game over the right-centerfield wall for his third home run of the season.
  • After the Mariners responded with three runs of their own in the top of the first, the AMCATS again took the lead in the top of the third when they also put up a three-spot of their own. Sophomore Joseph Castellano III (Holmes, NY) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to third two batters later when graduate student shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) reached on an error by the third baseman putting runners at second and third. Sophomore first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) then doubled to score Castellano. A failed squeeze attempt by Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) resulted in Drosidis being cut down at the plate but put runners at the corners for junior second baseman Christina Villa. Villa's drive to deep left-centerfield was more than enough to easily score both Rosenberg and the speedy Dunithan all the way from first.
  • The Mariners again clawed back a single run, this time in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 where it remained until the top of the seventh when the AMCATS put together a two-out rally. Rosenberg started it with his second two-base hit of the game, a sinking liner into centerfield that eluded the centerfielder's diving efforts. Dunithan then drove him in by looping a 2-2 pitch down the rightfield line for a single.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Saturday when they will host the Saint Joseph's College (ME) Monks for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Marlborough High School. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
