Spartans Take Down Baseball

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: On Thursday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Baseball team faced off with the Castleton University Spartans for a non-conference matchup at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Thursday, March 30, 2023
  • Score: Castleton 21, Anna Maria 5
  • Records: Castleton University Spartans 7-9 | Anna Maria AMCATS 7-9

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS came back from a 5-1 deficit in the fourth inning to tie the game at five but had no answer as the Spartans scored 16 runs in the final five innings
  • The AMCATS were first on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a one-out solo home run from senior designated hitter James Powers (Folsom, CA).
  • Trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, the AMCATS used a two-out rally to tie the game. Freshman catcher Brady Aylward (Southington, CT) reached on a walk and came all the way around to score on a double from junior second baseman Christina Villa (Concord, CA). A passed ball allowed Villa to move to third and Powers then walked to put runners on the corner for graduate student right fielder Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, MA). On a 1-0 pitch Marifiote hit one up into the wind that continued to carry to deep centerfield for his second home run of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The home run by Powers in the first and the homerun by Marifiote in the fourth inning was the third time this year that multiple AMCATS have homered in the same game. The other times were March 3rd against Penn State Abington (Villa and Kosta Drosidis) and March 16th against Fitchburg State (Villa and Marifiote).
  • The AMCATS continued a torrid pace on the basepaths, adding two more stolen bases to increase their season total to 26. For the season the AMCATS have only been caught stealing on 5 attempts (an 83.9% success rate), including 14 stolen bases in their last eight games.
  • Despite being roughed up a bit, the AMCATS pitching staff did record 13 strikeouts, giving them double-digits in four of their last five games.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Sunday when they will travel to meet the Lasell University Lasers for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
