Blue Jays Fly Past Women's Soccer, 6-1

PAXTON, Mass.—The University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays saw four different goal scorers in Monday afternoon's 6-1 win against the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 6-8-1 overall and 1-6-1 against league opponents.

The Blue Jays would need just 9:39 to get on the scoreboard at Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.) fired a shot from 18-yards out to best Anna Maria goalkeeper Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine).

The AMCATS evened the score to 1-1 five-and-a-half minutes later as sophomore Paige Leighton (Georgetown, Mass.) fed a long pass to freshman Emily Gorrivan (Windham, Maine), who deked one defender and drew out USJ goalkeeper Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.).

The tie would prove short-lived, as USJ's Dayna Gabino (Newington, Conn.) netted the game-winning goal 4:05 later on a deceiving cross from teammate Michelle Turkington (Cromwell, Conn.).

Scoring silenced for a 20-minute stretch until Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals in the 39th and 40th minutes. Her first goal of the day was assisted by Burke, while her second tally was unassisted.

The Blue Jays would add two more scores in the second half, as Lindsey Cifaldi (Wolcott, Conn.) had her initial shot saved but uncontained, and placed a follow-up shot over the diving Kneeland in the 54th minute. Five minutes later, Gambino scored again by collecting the ball off of a defender, taking one dribble, and firing a deep shot to the far corner of the net.

Kneeland totaled 14 saves in net for the AMCATS, who were outshot by the Blue Jays 38-6 on the afternoon. Dodge totaled five saves in net for USJ.

The AMCATS will be back in action on Friday, when they host Albertus Magnus College in a 3:00 p.m. GNAC game. The Blue Jays will travel to Emmanuel for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday.
