Andersen, Catucci Score in Women's Soccer 2-0 win against Daniel Webster

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's soccer team downed the visiting Eagles of Daniel Webster College by a score of 2-0 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at AMCAT Field.

The win marks the first of the season for the AMCATS, who improve to 1-1, while the loss drops the Eagles to 1-1.

The AMCATS's game-winning goal came in the 69th minute when freshman Emily Liakos (Arlington, Mass.) fed the ball wide from 30-yards out to sophomore Melissa Andersen (Oxford, Mass.). Andersen collected the ball, deked her defender, and shot from just outside the six-yard box.

Andersen had another chance to score with just over 16 minutes left to play in the game as she collected a pass a few steps outside of the right goal post, but her one-touch shot slid just outside the post.

With 31 seconds left to play, Anna Maria would tack on an insurance goal as freshman Savanah Catucci (Mahopac, N.Y.) collected a 60-yard pass from sophomore Paige Leighton (Georgetown, Mass.), carried the ball towards the net, and lightly tapped it into the net passed diving Eagles' goaltender Danielle Meanson (Derry, N.H.).

The first half remained scoreless, despite a 22-2 shots advantage for the AMCATS. Daniel Webster goaltender Amanda Dargee (Melbourne, Fla.) recorded eight saves to keep the first half scoreless. Anna Maria's Liakos had a team-best five shots in the first half, three of which were on net, while teammate Cristina Turley (Waterford, Conn.) chipped in with four shots.

Daniel Webster's best chance to score came in early in the second half, as Theresa Soy (Lowell, Mass.) outran her defender and forced Anna Maria goaltender Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) to make her only save of the game.

Dargee totaled 11 saves in net for Daniel Webster in nearly 71 minutes of action before handing the reins to teammate Danielle Meanson (Derry, N.H.), who added five saves. Both goaltenders allowed a goal each.

Anna Maria finished the game with a 36-3 advantage in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The AMCATS return to action on Saturday, September 6 with they travel to Becker College for a 12:00 p.m. start.
