Women's Soccer Blanked by JWU, 4-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's soccer team fell to the league-leading Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University 4-0 on Saturday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at AMCAT Field.

With the loss, the AMCATS' record evens to 5-5 overall and falls 0-3 in GNAC play, while the win improves the Wildcats to 7-4 overall and a flawless 3-0 in league action.

The Wildcats got on the board in the 15th minute as Kyra Selner (Sterling, Va.) fed a 25-yard long pass to Taylor Hopkins (Warminster, Pa.) just outside the 18-yard box. Hopkins swiftly deked an AMCAT defender and carried the ball to the 10 yards from the net, where she fired a low shot past the outstretched arms of Anna Maria goalkeeper Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine).

Johnson & Wales would tally a second score 15 minutes later as Tori Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii) slid in to meet a cross fed in from Emily McClarnon (Wakefield, R.I.) near the right corner flag.

The Wildcats had a few other opportunities to score in the first half, but Kneeland totaled seven saves to keep the AMCATS within two.

With 28:50 left to play in the second half, the Wildcats netted their third goal of the day as Megan Hughes (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored on a corner kick. Two minutes later, Selner netted a goal of her own, assisted by McClarnon, to give JWU the 4-0 lead.

Kneeland and the AMCAT defense held the Wildcats scoreless for the remainder of the half.

The Wildcats totaled 23 shots on the day, while Kneeland recorded 11 saves. JWU's Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) earned the win and totaled one save in 45 minutes in net before giving way to Jessica Rom (East Northport, N.Y.) and Cassie Collins (Oswego, N.Y.), who combined for three saves.

Freshman Savanah Catucci (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Fogg (Gorham, Maine) both tallied a team-best three shots for Anna Maria.

Anna Maria will be back in action on October 1st as they host Rivier University at 6:00 p.m. The Wildcats will host Albertus Magnus at 6:30 p.m., also on October 1st.
