Women's Soccer Shuts Out Mitchell, 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn.—The Anna Maria College women's soccer team downed the Mariners of Mitchell College 2-0 in Monday's non-conference game.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 5-4 on the season. Anna Maria has not reached five wins in a season since 2007. Mitchell falls to 0-6 with the loss.

Freshman Shannon Disco (Amherst, N.H.) and senior Arianna Masley (Oxford, Mass.) each netted goals for the AMCATS, who improved to 5-4-0 overall on the season. Freshman Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) recorded eight saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season.

Anna Maria had the better of possession in the opening half and cashed in at the 14:13 mark when freshman Savanah Catucci (Mahopac, N.Y.) slipped a pass to Disco for a head-on shot at the Mitchell goal. Disco blasted a shot that hit off the crossbar and deflected into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Trailing by a goal at the break, the Mariners came out in the second half and were the aggressors for the majority of the stanza. Mitchell outshot Anna Maria 13-6 in the period but couldn't get anything past Kneeland, who stopped all five shots on goal in the final 45 minutes.

The AMCATS got some breathing room in the 57th minute when Masley made it 2-0 with her team-leading fourth tally of the season. Emily Gorrivan (Windham, Maine) set up the goal with a cross from the right side to the far post, and Masley beat the keeper to the ball and deposited the easy score.

Mitchell's best chance at a goal came in the 68th minute when, following a corner kick, the ball found the foot of Samantha Cilenti (Winsted, Conn.) from 25 yards out. She rocketed a shot that looked destined to slip under the crossbar, but Kneeland made a leaping save and punched the ball over the top of the cage.

The Mariners held a 19-14 advantage in shots for the contest. Mitchell keeper Katie McBride (Paris, France) finished with five saves.

Anna Maria returns to action at home against Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
