Monks Slip Past Women's Soccer, 2-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-6-1, 3-2-1 GNAC) scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Anna Maria College (6-6-1, 1-4-1 GNAC), 2-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match at Westerlea Way Field on Wednesday afternoon.

A 13-0 lead in shots in the first half failed to yield a goal for the Monks, but the hosts finally hit pay dirt on their first shot of the second stanza, as sophomore Desiree Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored off a Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine) pass 1:42 into the latter frame. Jordan set up the play with a perfect right to left cross in the box to Parent, who redirected the ball into the right corner to make it a 1-0 game.

Junior defender Whitney White (Salem, N.H.) doubled the Monks' lead in the 70th minute when she scored on a free kick attempt from about 30 yards out on the right side. White launched slicing shot into the left panel of the net beyond the reach of Anna Maria freshman keeper Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) for the first goal of her NCAA career.

Overall, Saint Joseph's held a 26-0 lead in shots with a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Marina Cameron (Houlton, Maine) and freshman Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) split the contest in goal for the Monks and neither player was tested in the shutout effort. Kneeland tallied eight saves in the loss.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-0 in the history of the series with Anna Maria College.

Saint Joseph's plays at Norwich University on Friday at 4:30 PM while Anna Maria plays at Simmons College at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
