Volleyball Takes Crucial Match against Simmons, Falls to WPI

BOSTON—The Anna Maria College volleyball team downed the Sharks of Simmons College 3-1 in a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday as part of Simmons tri-match. In the middle match, the AMCATS fell to WPI, 3-0.

With today's results, Anna Maria improves to 15-13 overall and 5-4 in GNAC action.

Despite being outnumbered in both kills and digs, the AMCATS made efficient use of their 36 kills in order to down the Sharks 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23.

The biggest difference in the match was serving, as Simmons was inefficient with 17 service errors over the course of the four sets. Coupled with eight service aces for the AMCATS, the Sharks gave up a total of 25 points to Anna Maria on serves.

Freshman Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) led the team in the close battle with a team-best nine kills each. They both finished with double-doubles, as King totaled 14 digs and Foti added 11.

Senior setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) also recorded a double-double of 24 aces and 12 digs. Freshman Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) added 10 digs.

The Sharks saw a match-high 18 kills from Cailin Frederickson. Sarah Woodward added 15 kills, followed by Nicole Alberghini with 12 kills.

Simmons saw 15 digs from Andalyn Duke, followed by 14 digs from Alex Itasaka. Duke also dished out a match-high 49 assists on the day.

The win gives Anna Maria a much-needed GNAC win over a team higher in the standings.

WPI 3, ANNA MARIA 0

WPI held the AMCATS to just 18 kills in the second match of the day en route to the 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 win.

Senior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) led the team with seven kills, while Garcia paced the defense with 17 digs. Parker dished out 14 assists.

WPI saw 11 kills from Melissa Daigle. Cassandra Tomerlin totaled 17 digs, while Azita Bakhtyari and Shay Feeley combined for 23 assists.
