Shomo Sets Coaching Record in Volleyball's 3-2 win at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass.—The Anna Maria College volleyball team won their third-straight match with a 3-2 victory over the Nighthawks of Newbury College on Thursday evening. Game scores were 25-11, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 1-4.

RECORD SETTING WIN

Tonight's win was the 33rd for head coach Samantha Shomo, making her the winningest coach in Anna Maria volleyball history. She bests the 32 wins set by Nancy Pedersen-Gac, who was the head coach of the AMCATS from 1997-2001.

ROOKIE SUCCESS

A pair of rookies led the AMCATS on both the offensive and defensive ends, as freshman Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) tallied a double-double of 14 kills and 16 digs. She tallied her offensive output on an impressive .224 hitting percentage. On the defensive end, freshman Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) tallied a match-high 27 digs.

VETERAN SUPPORT

Sophomore Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) aided the AMCAT offense with 11 kills, while senior setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) dished out 32 assists in addition to tallying 14 digs and three kills.

NET PERFORMANCES

The AMCATS combined for two solo blocks and 15 assisted blocks over the course of the match. Senior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) finished the day with both solo blocks and five block assists, while classmate Brianna LaRegina (Troy, N.Y.) added three assisted blocks.

SERVICE, PLEASE

The Anna Maria rotation combined for 10 service aces throughout the five-set match. Garcia and junior Demi Carrero (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) both served three aces each in addition to single aces from Foti, Parker, LaRegina, and King.

NEWBURY NUMBERS

Newbury's Lina Miranda finished with a match-high 17 kills on a .261 hitting percentage. Courtney Banks added 11 kills, while Marlen Reynoso dished out a match-best 42 assists. Four different members of the Nighthawk squad finished in the double-digits column in digs: Lindsey Clark (17), Reynoso (16), Gabriela Aldaco (13), and Julia Leggett (12).

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS travel to Mount Holyoke College on Saturday for a tri-match with the Lyons and UMass Dartmouth. The team will play the hosts at 11:00 a.m. and will take on UMD at 1:00 p.m.
