Volleyball Falls to Emmanuel, Downs Lasell in Tri-Match Action

BOSTON, Mass.- The Anna Maria College volleyball team split a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matches on Saturday morning, falling 3-0 to Emmanuel College before bouncing back for a 3-1 win against Lasell.

Set scores against the Saints were 25-17, 25-12, 25-20

Both teams in the 10:00 a.m. match got off to slow starts, essentially trading points until reaching a stalemate at 8-8. At that point, the Saints made their first run, taking a 14-9 lead, only to see Anna Maria battle back to cut the deficit to one at 16-15. Senior captain Brittany Tutalo (Johnston, R.I.) was able to grab momentum back, as she earned four kills and a block assist in a span of 11 points to lead the Saints to a 25-17 win in set one. 

Emmanuel was much more consistent in the second set, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage, and evenutally stretching the lead to 23-11 after a six-point run. Tutalo, Starr Ripley, and Mary Shelow combined for nine kills in the set and the Saints closed it out on an attack error by Anna Maria, taking the set 25-12.

Anna Maria showed determination in the third set, leading 10-9 at one point and forcing a 16-16 tie after consecutive kills by Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) and Brianna LaRegina (Troy, N.Y.). The Saints, however, found an answer in the form of freshman Angelica Czercowy, who produced four kills in a run of nine points, and won the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.

ANNA MARIA 3, LASELL 1

The AMCATS upended the Lasers, 3-1, in the middle match of the day 25-20, 25-18, 15-25, 25-12.

King led the team with 12 kills, while freshman Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) paced the defense with a stellar 34 digs.

Offensively, Foti added eight kills while LaRegina and Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) added seven kills apiece.

Senior setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) dished out 32 assists in the victory for Anna Maria.

The Lasers saw 12 kills and 12 digs from Olivia Addington. Caitlyn Garcia added 16 digs, while Taylor Hansen added 13 digs.

 The AMCATS travel to Johnson & Wales for a 7:00 p.m. league game on Wednesday before hosting the University of St. Joseph and UMass Dartmouth in a tri-match on Saturday.
