Volleyball Downs Salem State 3-1 on Dig Pink Night

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College volleyball team downed the Vikings of Salem State University 3-1 on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

The match was Anna Maria's annual Dig Pink rally, and through a T-shirt sale and game-day donations, the team raised over $600 for the Sideout Foundations fight against breast cancer.

With today's win, the AMCATS improve to 10-9 overall, while the loss drops Salem State to 3-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The AMCATS totaled 42 kills, including 13 in the fourth set, to take the victory. Set scores were 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, and 25-14. After winning the first set, the AMCATS struggled to take control in set two, as the Vikings led from the opening point and did not relinquish the lead.

Anna Maria was also standout on the defensive end, totaling 50 digs and seven blocks while holding their opponents to just 32 kills.

AMCAT OFFENSE

Freshman Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) and senior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) both finished with 11 kills apiece, while sophomores Telliah Bursie (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) finished with six kills each.

Senior setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) dished out 34 assists in the match and is now just four assists shy of the coveted 2,000 assists milestone.

As a team, the AMCATS made just 18 hitting errors to finish the day with a .231 hitting percentage.

AMCAT DEFENSE

Senior Brittany Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 21 digs to lead the defense. Parker was the only other member of the squad to reach double-digits in the digs category with 10. At the net, Anna Maria saw three solo and three assisted blocks from Goulet.

SALEM STATE NUMBERS

The Vikings were paced by Emily Peay (Lebanon, Conn.) with 10 kills and eight digs. Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) dished out 29 assists.

Salem State finished the match with an even 32 kills and 32 errors for a zero hitting percentage.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS host Wentworth on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. game before hitting the road to travel for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Emmanuel and Lasell on Saturday.
