Women’s Basketball Holds Senior Day

Paxton, MA: The Anna Maria College women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day at the Fuller Center before falling to the Elms College Blazers 79-62 to close out the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season.

THE BASICS:

SENIOR DAY:

• Prior to the game, the AMCATS recognized their graduating senior class as part of senior day. The senior quartet of guard Ashley Rufo (Pittsfield, MA), guard Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, MA), guard Mariah Carey (Worcester, MA) and guard Julitza Delgado (Southbridge, MA) were honored by coaches, teammates, family members and fans for their time with the women's basketball program. All four of these student-athletes have each made outstanding contributions not only on the ice but to the entire Anna Maria campus community as a whole. Although their time with the program may be ending they will forever be a part of the AMCAT family.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Blazers used a 12-point first quarter from center Angelica Peguero-Flores (Springfield, MA) to power out to a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. A 22-9 run in the second quarter would stretch the lead to 16. The AMCATS kept the visitors off the board for the final 2:35 of the first half and shrunk the lead to seven but never got closer.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Senior Ashely Rufo (Pittsfield, MA) lead the AMCATS with a career high 23 points, including six 3-pointers.
• Fellow AMCAT seniors Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, MA) and Julitza Delgado (Southbridge, MA) put up double-digit point totals, scoring 11 and 10 respectively.
• The AMCATS made the most of Blazer miscues, scoring 20 points off 25 turnovers.
• Peguero-Flores lead all scorers with 26 points on 12-19 shooting. She also pulled down 17 rebounds for a dominating double-double.
• Aiyanalee Lopez (Leominster, MA) also had a double-double for the Blazers, scoring 11 points and recording 12 rebounds.

UP NEXT: 

• The AMCATS have secured the 11th seed in the GNAC playoffs. They travel to Rivier on Tuesday for a 7:00 conference tournament game.
