Women’s Basketball Shocks Lasers Behind Hammond’s 30

BOXSCORE

NEWTON, MA: Senior guard Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, MA) scored 30 points including going seven-of-seven from behind the arc as the Anna Maria College women's basketball team won 70-67 at Lasell University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Newton, MA.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, February 12, 2022
  • Score: Anna Maria 70, Lasell 67
  • Records: Lasers of Lasell 8-13, 6-9 GNAC | AMCATS of Anna Maria 4-16, 3-11 GNAC

THE GAME WAS DECIDED WHEN:

  • Clinging to a one-point lead with 11 seconds remaining, the AMCATS' defense forced the Lasers into taking a three, with the shot falling short and out-of-bounds. After an Anna Maria timeout to advance the ball to midcourt, Lasell was forced to foul Hammond with five seconds remaining, and the team captain calmly buried both shots. The Lasers' last second three was again off the mark, and the AMCATS celebrated their second win in three games, spoiling Lasell's senior day.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Hammond's 30 points were two off her career-high of 32. She also pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and tallied two steals.
  • Lasell senior forward Meg Carroll (Douglas, MA) led the Lasers with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.
  • Anna Maria freshman forward Marinique Reddin (Tampa, FL) posted her fourth career double-double, with 11 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block.
  • Lasell freshman Jasmine DePina (Providence, RI) had a double-double with ten points and a game-high 15 boards.
  • Anna Maria senior guard Mariah Carey (Worcester, MA) buried a huge three-pointer with 43 seconds left to give the AMCATS a three-point lead at 68-65. She would finish with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
  • In a statistical oddity, the AMCATS shot 34.3 percent from behind the arc as a team, their best performance since February 12, 2020 against Johnson & Wales, exactly two years ago.
