Golden Bears Clip Women’s Ice Hockey in Season Opener

MARLBOROUGH, MA: The Anna Maria College women's ice hockey team opened their regular season when they welcomed Western New England University on Friday evening for a non-conference matchup at the New England Sports Center.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a scoreless first period, the AMCATS were the first ones on the board in the second period when freshman forward Tessa Henry (Milestone, SK) sent a pass along the blue line to senior defenseman Abigail Vigliotte (Medford, MA) who fired off a slap shot that was stopped by the Golden Bears netminder but rebounded directly to sophomore forward Jordyn Bleaney (Nanoose Bay, BC) who put the puck into the wide-open net.
  • It would be the AMCATS' only goal of the game as the momentum began to swing the Golden Bears' way in the closing seconds of the second period when Zoe Galanoudis scored an unassisted goal with 51 seconds remaining.
  • The Bears doubled their edge just over six minutes into the third as Maddie Pope scored an unassisted goal of her own. Pope also finished the game with an empty net goal with eight seconds left on the clock.
  • Senior goalkeeper Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC) recorded 35 saves on 33 shots.

Anna Maria will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to West Springfield, MA to complete their home-and-home series with Western New England, at the Olympia Ice Center. The teams will take the ice for a 5 PM puck drop.
