Women's Soccer Drops Battle to Blue Jays, 3-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—The University of St. Joseph soccer team generated 40 shots and converted on three of them as the Blue Jays defeated visiting Anna Maria 3-0 on Monday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game.

The AMCATS fall to 3-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference while USJ improved to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the GNAC. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.), Anne Marie Masayda (Watertownn, Conn.) and Nicole Aquillo (Amston, Conn.) scored for the Blue Jays. Sarah Palko (Southington, Conn.) had two assists while Lindsey Cifaldo (Walcott, Conn.) had one for St. Joseph. The Blue Jays recorded a commanding 40-5 edge in shots on the day while they also held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
 

SCORING

First Half: Burke got the Blue Jays on the board at 8:31 when she took a through ball from Palko and dribbled in to about five yards before nailing home her second goal of the year. Cifaldi played a long ball to Palko down the left flank and her touch pass set up Masayda from point-blank range who made it 2-0 at 12:08
 

Second Half: After going into halftime at 2-0, Aquillo scored an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute. She dribbled deep into the box on the left side and slid a shot across the goalmouth and inside the far post.

 

GOALKEEPERS

Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) needed only to make two saves to record her 38th career win in goal and 27th shutout. Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) made nine saves for Anna Maria before leaving the game due to an injury. Teresea Ryan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) filled in admirably and made 12 saves, many from close range, on 13 shots faced.

The AMCATS women's soccer team travels to Johnson & Wales University of Rhode Island on Saturday, October 17 for a 4:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic conference matchup.
