Bottis Penalty Kick in Overtime Seals Women's Soccer's 1-0 win over Suffolk

PAXTON, Mass. – Sophomore Ashley Bottis (Rutland, Mass.) buried a penalty kick in the 103rdminute of action to lead the Anna Maria College women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win against the Rams of Suffolk University in Saturday afternoon's Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup.

The win boosts the AMCATS to 3-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in GNAC play, while the loss drops Suffolk to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in league play.

MILESTONES

The win marks the first for the AMCATS against the Rams in program history—the Rams hold a 4-1 lead in the series, which dates back to 2011, when Anna Maria joined the GNAC. It marks the second league win for the AMCATS since joining the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bottis's goal broke open over 102 minutes of scoreless soccer as neither team managed to find the back of the net in regulation or the first overtime period. Suffolk held the advantage in the shots column, holding a 23-15 lead including a 13-5 lead in shots-on goal.

Suffolk's Jennifer Martin (Higganum, Conn.) booted a game-high 14 shots, seven of which were on-target. The AMCATS saw seven total shots from Bottis.

BEND IT LIKE BOTTIS

With her eighth goal of the season, Bottis takes sole possession of second place in goals scored in a season within the last decade. The record is 16, set by Kelly Downey in 2004.

GOALKEEPERS

Anna Maria netminder Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) totaled 13 saves in the complete-game shutout victory. Suffolk's Kirsten Weiker (Durham, N.H.) tallied four saves in the loss.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS embark on a four-game road streak, beginning with a 4:00 p.m. game at Lasell on Wednesday. The team does not return to AMCAT Field until Saturday, October 24th for a 2:00 p.m. game against Simmons. Suffolk is also in action on Wednesday as they travel to St. Joseph's of Maine for a 3:30 start.
