Fighting Scots Sweep AMCATS

Paxton, Mass. – Anna Maria senior Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, MA) and junior Alex Rodriguez (Puerto Rico, PR) each lead the team with six kills and freshman setter Samantha Parker (Athol, MA) contributed fifteen assists, but Gordon College junior Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, VA) smashed a match-best ten kills to help spark the Fighting Scots to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-18) sweep in Wednesday evening's non-conference volleyball match at the Fuller Center.  With the loss, the AMCATS slide to 2-18 while Gordon improves to 13-11 overall.

In set one, each team battled neck and neck, with Gordon taking a late 24-20 advantage.  Anna Maria was able to storm back, tying the score at 24 after a huge ace from Rodriguez, and a key kill from Acosta. Gordon fought off the AMCAT surge, as sophomore Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, IA) closed the game out registering one of her seven kills on the night.

The AMCATS built an early 5-2 lead in the second set, but Fighting Scots sophomore Joy Kimmel (Madison, CT) proved to be the deciding factor in the match, registering ten of her team high twenty-six assists in leading Gordon on a 23-14 run for the win.

The Fighting Scots continued to attack in the third set, outscoring the AMCATS 25-18.  Freshman Courtney Smith (Southington, CT) chipped in with three kills and freshman Brittany Jackson registered nine digs for Anna Maria in the loss.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday when the travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC tri-match with the Saints and Norwich University. Matches are slated to start at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
