QUINCY, Mass. - The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 setbacks to non-conference opponents Lesley and Eastern Nazarene Saturday afternoon at the Lahue Physical Education Center. The AMCATS start the season with a 0-2 mark while the Lions elevate to 3-0 overall with the wins and the Lynx move to 1-1.
Senior Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) registered 10 kills on the afternoon to lead Anna Maria. Freshman setter Samantha Parker handed out 15 assists and Megan Leyton landed 5 aces in the two-game span. Defensively, Kelly Delany racked up 26 digs on the day.
In the opening match of the day, Anna Maria was pitted against Lesley University. The Lynx were able to capitalize on four AMCAT errors to open up an 11-4 lead. A 5-0 run highlighted by two Kaitlyn Miller service aces put the Lynx in front 18-8 as Lesley cruised to a 25-17 victory.
A Lynx attack error found the team in a 7-4 hole in the middle set, but kills from Ortwein and Johnson sparked a 10-1 run on which Lesley stormed away for a 25-10 win. With the third set tied at 10-10, two Sandy Acosta kills saw the AMCATS take a 14-10 lead. An Ortwein ace wrapped around a pair of AMCAT errors forced an Anna Maria timeout with the game tied at 14-14, and a Johnson service ace started a 4-0 run that fueled Lesley's 25-19 win.
In the Lions' second contest of the afternoon, the hosts topped Anna Maria 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17 to remain unbeaten on the year.
Eastern Nazarene sprinted out to a 7-1 advantage in the opening set, fueled by two service aces by Clinkscale.
The AMCATS cut the Lions' lead to just six points, 20-14, as Megan Leyton picked up an ace. Eastern Nazarene rebounded to claim the final five points of the set.
The second set was tightly contested with the Lions controlling a slight lead throughout the frame. Anna Maria minimized the margin to one point, 17-16, before Eastern Nazarene rattled off three-consecutive points.
The third set saw six lead changes and eight ties but the Lions prevailed after falling behind early, 6-8. Sorenson posted her second ace of the match to seal ENC's third-straight victory.
Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Cury for a 6:00 pm match.
