Lady AMCATS Swept in Tri-Match

Paxton, Mass. – Anna Maria College hosted a volleyball tri-match today at Fuller Activities Center with Suffolk University and Castleton State College. Suffolk went 2-0, while Castleton split (1-1) and the AMCATS were swept (0-2) on the day. Anna Maria drops to 1-10 (0-2 GNAC) on the season, Castleton moves to 3-5 while Suffolk pushes to 7-6 (1-1 GNAC).

Anna Maria 2 Castleton State 3 (27-25, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12)

Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) led the Anna Maria offense with 31 assists and freshman Emily Adriaansen (Pepperell, Mass.) collected 10 service aces but it wasn't enough as the Spartans squeaked by the AMCATS in the 5 set thriller. Anna Maria had three players in double digits for digs, Parker (13), Justine Lalonde (Shirley, NY) (10) and Brittany Jackson (Larchmont, NY) (16) while Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) had a match high seventeen kills.

 In the see-saw event Castleton was led by Amanda Chambers' (Lake George, NY) 10 kills and Bridget McCarthy's (Nashua, NH) 20 assists.  

Castleton State took game one in extra time 27-25, the AMCATS battled back to even the score at 1-1 with a 25-23 win in game 2. Both teams traded 25-22 games to get to the 5th set.

Castleton's Nichole Valastro (South Glenn Falls, NY) held serve for five straight points, to open game five with a 5-0 lead for CSC. The AMCATS countered with Adriaansen behind the baseline scoring seven straight points to take a 9-8 advantage. The AMCATS took advantage of a Spartans' error to hold the lead at 11-10 but Castleton battled down the stretch outscoring AMC 5-1 for the win.

Castleton State 0 Suffolk 3 (26-24, 25-23, 25-21)

Suffolk was led by sophomore Tori Brillaud's (North Andover, Mass.) 11 kills and 10 digs in a straight set victory over Castleton State at neutral Anna Maria in Paxton, Mass. Sophomore Glamarys Sierra (Carolina, PR) and Jennifer Duston (Nashua, NH) each contributed 13 and 17 assist each for the Rams.

The Spartans, who earned a split on the day, we led by Shelby Smyth's 11 digs on defense while Sarah Wheeler led the attack with 6 kills. Bridget McCarty handed out 8 assists in the loss.

Anna Maria 0 Suffolk 3 (25-21, 25-13, 25-21)

Tory Brillaud notched twelve kills and seven digs to lead Suffolk to a 3-0 GNAC victory over Anna Maria by game scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25 -21. Outside hitter Maggie Hillman added 9 kills for the Rams while Colbey Kennedy had 8 digs on defense.

Anna Maria was led by senior Sandy Acosta's 8 kills and teammates Sam Parkers 16 assists and 7 digs. The AMCATS also received three service aces from junior Alex Rodriguez (Puerto Rico, PR). Sophomore Jacqueline Clinton (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Brittany Jackson combined for 13 or the teams 30 digs in the backfield.

Anna Maria will be idle until Tuesday evening when the AMCATS head Lasell College GNAC contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
