Newbury Sweeps AMCATS in Women’s Volleyball

Paxton, Mass. – Anna Maria senior Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) registered a team high eight kills and freshman setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) dished out nine assists, but Newbury College's Jessy Touron (Brockton, Mass.) smashed a match-best 10 kills to help spark the Nighthawks to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) sweep in Thursday evening's non-conference volleyball match at the Fuller Center.

With the loss the AMCATS slip to 1-12, while Newbury improves to 6-10 overall.

In set one, the sides battled to a 5-5 score, Anna Maria capitalized on three straight Nighthawks' miscues to grab a 9-6 edge. Newbury fought back outscoring AMC 19-11 down the stretch for the game one win.

Newbury built a 4-0 lead to open the second stanza, back to back kills from Alex Rodriguez and Parker and a pair of attack errors by the visitors cut the lead to 5-4. The Nighthawks went on a 7-2 run to increase the lead to 16-9 and pull away for the 25-18 win.

Freshman Brittany Jackson (Larchmont, NY) had a game-high nine digs while junior Megan Leyton (Eastham, Mass.) and Parker added six digs apiece for Anna Maria. Outside hitter Jacqueline Clinton (Walpole, Mass.) contributed 3 assists, 3 digs and a kill in the loss.

Newbury was led by sophomore Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, MI) 3 kill, 2 assists and 8 dig effort while senior Sara Young (Waterloo, NY) dished out 13 assists.

Anna Maria returns to action on Sunday when the travel to Mount Ida College for a GNAC tri-match with the Mustangs and Albertus Magnus College. Matches are slated to start at Noon and 2:00 pm.
