Worcester State Sets AMCATS, 3-0

Paxton, Mass. – Junior Kayla Cummings (Auburn, ME) led all players with 7 kills but it wasn't enough as Anna Maria College suffered a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-11) setback to visiting Worcester State University on Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball action.

Freshman Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) led the AMCATS with 14 assists while sophomore Kelley Delaney (Charlton, Mass.) led the defense with five digs.

For Worcester State, sophomore Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, NY) scored 16 assists and teammates Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) and Becky Lebel (Millbury, Mass.) each had 6 kills.

Worcester State took and early 10-4 lead in game with help from four straight points by Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.). An ace by Sam Parker cut the deficit to 5 points at 14-9, but the Lancers were too strong down the stretch outscoring Anna Maria 7-3 to finish out the first set.

In set 2 Anna Maria held a 10-9 lead after three straight points by Delaney. With the game tied at 14, Worcester State scored four straight points to take an 18-14 advantage. Anna Maria crept to within two points at 22-20 but Worcester State pulled away to the 25-20 win.

With junior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, Mass.) serving the Lancers jumped out quickly to a 9-2 score in the third set. Anna Maria couldn't get the offense to fire on all cylinders and dropped the set 25-10 and the match 3-0.

Anna Maria returns to the courts on Saturday afternoon when they travel to St. Joe's (ME) for a conference match-up with the Monks beginning at 11:00 am and a non-conference tilt with Framingham State University slated for 1:00pm.

Worcester State will also be scoring a tri-match on Saturday when they travel to Southern Maine University to battle UMASS-Dartmouth at 2:00pm and the hosting Huskies at 4:00 pm.
